Hard Top The permanently mounted hard roof of most cars. In the case of a hardtop convertible, the metal roof which can be removed or stowed in the car. |
Harmonic Balancer (Crank Pulley) A large weight attached to the crankshaft pulley. The Harmonic balancer smoothes out the engine's natural pulsations and makes the vehicle run smoother. It drives most of the large belts on the front of the engine. |
Hatchback Rear door of a vehicle in which the entire rear of the car opens up for easy access for unloading and loading. Hatchbacks are very convenient for many people who appreciate the versatility of having the ability to carry larger loads without sacrificing the convenience of a smaller car. |

Header Panel Assembly The sheet metal assembly behind the grill to which the grill and headlights, etc., are attached. |
Headlight Assembly The headlight frames, lights, bulbs, etc., and associated hardware that go together and are mounted in the grille of the vehicle. |

Headlight Bezel/Door The bezel is the trim ring around your headlights. The headlight "door" is the protective covering over the headlights that swings out of the way on cars so equipped. |
Headlight Control Module The electronic module that controls headlight operation, normally located under the hood on the firewall or on the inside of one of the fenders. |
Headlight Motor The motor that swings the headlights up or down. The headlights are actuated in a number of ways, either by a simple switch, or in more luxurious automobiles, by light sensor. |

Headlight Switch (Auto Headlamps) The headlight on-off switch, it often controls the dimming of the interior lights and is either mounted on the steering column or on the dash. |
Heads Up Display The heads up display, or HUD, is a hi-tech imaging system that projects vehicle information onto the windshield or onto a small screen directly in the driver's view. Normally only found on high-end luxury or sports vehicles. |
Heater Controls The heater operational controls, normally consisting of the temperature thermostat and fan speed controls. On most vehicles they are located on the dashboard, within easy reach of the driver and front-seat passengers. |

Heater Core The heater core is a small radiator-like part that allows heated engine coolant to warm the passenger compartment. It's normally underneath the dash, mounted to the firewall. |
Hood The hinged metal cover over the engine, and extends from the windshield to the grill, covering most of the front of the vehicle. |
Hood Hinge Two large, spring-loaded arms that hold up the hood and allow it to open or close. They're normally at the back corners of the hood, underneath it. If the hood of the car pivots forward upon opening, then the hinges are at the front corners. |

Hood Piston/Strut Sort of like a shock absorber for the hood, the piston/strut assembly actually assists in opening heavier hoods, and holds the hood up once it's fully open. |
Horn An audible warning device for other drivers, the horn is normally activated by a button on the steering wheel. The horn itself is under the hood, most often at the front, hidden by the grill. |
Hub The hub is what the wheel of the car bolts to, contains the bearings and most often is the mounting point for the front brakes. It is located directly behind the wheel of the car and is not visible in most cases from the outside of the vehicle. |

decorative plastic or metal covering attached to the wheel, it completely
covers most of the wheel rim.
