T-Top  Basically a split sunroof, the T-Top consists of two glass or plastic window panels on the roof of the passenger compartment, with a solid partition running down the center of the roof.

Tailgate  The rearmost door on a station wagon, SUV, or a pickup truck that gives you access to the "bed" of the vehicle. Tailgates can hinge downward or to the side to open, and may even roll downward into the vehicle to open.

Tailgate Glass  The rear window of a station wagon or SUV, above the tailgate. The tailgate glass may be locked in place, or may open either electrically or manually, and may be tinted to enhance the vehicle's appearance and passenger comfort.

Tailgate Motor  The tailgate motor is normally mounted inside the rear of the car and drives the tailgate up and down. It can be a simple switched system, or can be controlled via one of the numerous computer modules that are finding their way into vehicles.

Tailgate Window Motor  The tailgate window motor is located inside the tailgate, and drives the tailgate window up and down.

Tailgate Window Regulator  The lever and gear assembly inside the tailgate that actually moves the window up or down, used with hand-crank windows.

Taillight  Collectively, any of the rear lights of a vehicle, including the brake lights, turn signals and parking lamps.

Temperature Control Module  On cars with more sophisticated temperature control systems, the Temperature Control Module increases or lowers the temperature of the passenger compartment in accordance with the thermostat settings of the passenger and driver. It's located behind the dashboard in most cases.

Temperature Controls  The thermostat and fan switches located on the temperature control panel. Most often centrally located in the dashboard, but they are increasingly separated into more areas so that each passenger can have their own climate control.

Third Brake Light  The brake light mounted in the rear window, on the trunk lid or tailgate.

Throttle Body Assembly  On vehicles so equipped, the throttle body directly controls the airflow into the engine, and is controlled by the accelerator pedal. It's normally installed close to the center of the engine, between the air cleaner assembly and the intake manifold.

Timing Cover  A pressed metal plate on the front of the engine, it contains the gearing for the timing gears, crankshaft and camshaft. It's right behind the crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer.

Tire  The rubber parts that actually contact the road surface, tires are mounted onto a rim, collectively the tire and rim create a vehicle's wheel.

Torsion Bar  A suspension component that replaces the springs on vehicles that are so equipped. Torsion bars are spring steel bars that mount between the axle and frame on either side of the vehicle.

Traction Control Module  The main computer that determines how hard each wheel pulls in many all-wheel drive vehicles. The traction control module receives wheel speed input from all four wheels, and directs power to each wheel as necessary to prevent wheel slippage.

Trailer Hitch  An assembly attached to the rear bumper or frame of a vehicle that provides a mechanical connection for you to tow a trailer.

Trailering Control Module  Controls the braking and lighting of some trailers on vehicles that are so equipped.

Trailing Arm  A suspension component that keeps the axle centered properly on a vehicle. If so equipped, trailing arms will mount to the rear of each side of the axle and extend to the frame.

Transfer Case Adapter  The housing that allows the transfer case to the transmission.

Transfer Case Assembly  The part of a four-wheel or all-wheel drive system that directs transmission power to the front wheels. The transfer case is a large "box" mounted on the rear of the transmission, and will have a drive shaft connecting it to the front axle.

Transfer Case Control Module  Controls the engagement of the transfer case into or out of four-wheel drive.

Transfer Case Shift Motor (Electric Shift)  An electric motor that causes the transfer case to engage, on vehicles equipped with this feature. The motor mounts on the outside of the transfer case, and is activated by the four-wheel drive selector.

Transmission Assembly  Connects directly to the rear of the engine and transfers the energy from the engine to the drive shaft and then on to the wheels. It's normally underneath the center of the vehicle, except in the case of front-wheel drive, where it is part of the transaxle assembly, located on the rear and underneath the engine.

Transmission Control Module  Controls the shifting points of an automatic transmission based on inputs from various other sensors on the vehicle.

Transmission Torque Converter  A large doughnut shaped part, the torques converter sandwiches between the engine and an automatic transmission underneath the bell housing. The torque converter provides a means for transmitting the engine power to the transmission.

Turbocharger  The turbocharger, on vehicles equipped with one, is powered by exhaust gases and is used to boost the amount of air that is pushed into the engine, for increased horsepower. It's normally located on one side of the engine and is directly connected to both the exhaust and the intake air system.

Turn Signal Light  The turn signal lights, used to indicate to other drivers an imminent change of direction. Most often located near the corners of a vehicle in the fenders, they can also be mounted on the corners of the bumper panels.
