I had my transmission rebuilt & overhauled last year,the mechanic told me i could drive it for another 100,000 miles.6,000 miles later
the car made popping sound and wouldn't go anywhere,I had it towed back to the guy and he told me it sounds like the torque converter and that's gonna cost me $750 to repair,he never replace it the first time.Should that been replaced when he did the rebuild and overhaul? What is rebuild and overhaul? Ihad to pay someone $650 to fix it,now a month later the car won't go into 4th gear. it's a automatic.The rebuild and overhaul cost me $1800.Can someone give me answers please,I want to know if can take this guy to court.

What is rebuild and overhaul?
A rebuild or overhaul in a transmission is replacing all parts that do not measure up to manufacturers specs.
In the case of a transmission needing rebuilt would mean that any system that contains any of the olds trans fluid should be flushed or replaced to remove any metal or foreign matter that was left over from the trans wearing out in the first place.
The torque convertor and transmission oil cooler are two of these items.
The torque convertor holds quite a bit of fluid and if it was not flushed, then all the metal or foreign matter in the old fluid was pumped back into the new transmission causing excessive wear.
The trans oil cooler is usaully a part of the radiator. It has two metal lines that run into the side of it, using engine coolant to cool the trans fluid. This should also be flushed out or replaced when a trans is rebuilt.
I do not do trans rebuilts for the simple fact, a newly rebuilt unit, from a respected company,with a very good warranty may be purchased for about the same price as the cost of rebuilding one.
As far as a lawsuit, if he gave a written warranty for the trans then the torque convertor should be included in that warranty, seeing how it is a part of the transmission. When a transmission is ordered from a salvage yard or dealer, they always include the torque convertor.
But since you had someone else to work on it now, and are having forth gear trouble, to me that would void any warranty from the guy that worked on it before.
This is not legal advise, just my opinion.
