I have a 1999 Dodge ram 1500 quad cab, which I discovered today has a broken pinion gear lying at the bottom of the punkin, I removed both axles, the bearing caps but I cannot remove the gaers, they slide forward about 3/4" and stop, If anyone has any suggestions

Not real sure about the newer models, but the last dodge I worked on..
When you removed the carrier bearing caps, on the left side, where the race sets back in, there was an adjuster nut that held the preload on the carrier bearing. It needs to be cleaned really good, to be able to see how it screws back into the axle housing. It's been awhile, but it seems like there was a locking bolt that screwed into the outer side of the axle housing to keep it from backing off. Look around the housing, directly around where the bearing race sets, and it looks like just a bolt head and when you see it, it makes you wonder what it holds, That's about the best I can explain it for now, I hate the newer haynes and chilton manual, because they don't give out that info, I've got some older books, but I'm not sure which axle to look up for you.

There is a tool made for that job its is a hex head socket or you can make one with a ford alignment cam bushing and a long pipe that is what I use at work when I do those types of axles.
